Repairs

Garage door won't close or open? Openers are designed to open doors that are properly balanced. If your door seems to be opening slowly as if the opener is struggling, you do not necessarily need a new opener but you do have a problem and potentially unsafe condition. Even older garage door systems should operate smoothly. The door is most likely out of balance and needs to be adjusted. Al the Garage Door Guy will diagnose the problem and recommend solutions.

TIPS & SAFETY

For many DIY'ers it may be tempting to install or repair your own garage door. It seems like an easy straight-forward job but the springs, cables, and brackets necessary to lift a heavy garage door are under extreme tension and can be dangerous. There are many considerations when installing a garage door system…thickness of your sections, weight of the door, required headroom, location of the garage door opener, location of door sensor, tamper-resistant brackets, safety cables, emergency release and other factors for safety, maximum performance, and extended life.

Garage Door Maintenance

MAINTENANCE

If you like to tinker there are several maintenance items that can (and should) be accomplished:

  • Shoot graphite into locks.
  • Oil the door rollers, bearings and hinges with a silicon lubricant or light machine oil.
  • Clean the photo eyes of debris.
  • Squeaky Springs? Springs can squeak and be noisy under normal use and does not necessarily indicate a problem. Before calling AL, use a spray-on lubricant. If the noise persists, please call for service. The garage door’s springs unfortunately wear out and can become the most dangerous part of your door resulting in serious injury.
  • Check cables. The garage door cables together with the garage door springs are responsible to lift the weight of the garage door anytime the garage door open or closed. If these cables are frayed or worn, they are in danger of breaking, which can cause injury. If your cables are frayed, please call AL for assessment.
  • Check bottom brackets. The bottom brackets of the garage door are under extreme tension. Loose brackets can cause injuries and damage to your door. If your bracket is loose, please call AL.
  • Clean the tracks and check track for bends or misalignment. If tracks are not plumb and parallel, wheels can drag. This problem causes premature wear and tear.
Garage Door Remote

TROUBLESHOOTING REMOTE

If you are having issues with your remote not working, check these items before reprogramming:

  • Check to see if your remote has a battery. If it does, it may need replacing.
  • Make sure the opener is receiving power.
  • Is the opener on vacation mode or locked?
  • Electric Eye on the opener free of debris? If there is a spider web, or some debris over the eye, it may prevent reception of the beam to the unit.
  • Did you just change the light bulbs in garage door opener? If so, make sure they are not LED bulbs as they may be interfering with the remote signal.
  • If you have fluorescent lights in your garage, make sure they are not flickering. A flickering fluorescent bulb may interfere with the remote signal. Replace the bulb.
  • Try reprogramming your remote. While reprogramming, make sure that you do not have any other wireless devices on…computer router, bluetooth radio, etc., as these devices may cause noise that will interfere with programming.
